A Jewelry Box for a Priceless Antique Collection

The contents of her jewelry box are precious to any woman. Vintage jewelry stored in an antique box can only mean double the joy for her. There is a charm to the jewelry and the trinket boxes of yesteryears.

Antique jewelry also goes by the name vintage or estate ornaments. The jewelry is unmatched as it was made a few generations ago and is typical of those times in terms of style. What makes these pieces all the more precious is their quality and finish that has stood the test of time.

Based on the period they were made in, antique jewelry is classified into various genres and designs. Victorian, Edwardian, and Art Nouveau were some of the popular styles then. A few others were Retro and the Art Deco styles.

When you have a few pieces of antique jewelry in your collection, you will want to store them the best way possible. Your best bet would be specially designed jewelry boxes. You cannot do better than to match the elegance of antique jewelry with a similar box made in the same period.

Being experts in the art forms of their era, master craftsmen created antique jewelry boxes. Each of the pieces was laboriously hand made adding to its uniqueness. Other names for these boxes are jewel cases, caskets or even trinket boxes. Some of the commonly used materials were cast metal and these were finished with a coat of gold or silver and in some cases copper and ivory.

Mass production of these boxes began with the Industrial Revolution, when a lot of experimenting also happened with styles. Electroplating of boxes with gold or silver, known as 'Ormulu', was done. Some other finishes to consider are French Bronze or the Roman Gold, the French Grey, or even the Parisian silver.

Soon, ivory finishes too became popular and this replaced electroplating. The old world ivory look was achieved with boxes being painted with white enamel and then being treated with oxides. They were even marketed as more durable than gold or silver counterparts.

Art Nouveau which developed in the 1900s became an immensely popular antique art style. Flowing elements, nature based motifs, and asymmetrical lines characterized this romantic art form. What many don't know is that the floral motifs are an inspiration from the Victorian era.

Some antique jewelry boxes comes with a trademark from their manufacturer on them while others do not. The main reason for this is because bigger marketers were unwilling to share the credit with the makers of the box. This in no way brought the value of the box down. This elaborate carving and decorating of jewelry boxes lasted 15 years between 1904 and 1918.

When it came to jewelry boxes, the trend, post the World War I shifted back to utility rather than ornamentation. Antique jewelry cases can still be found these days. Real antique boxes are quite expensive while the imitation ones are not so bad and definitely easier on the wallet. There is nothing to beat bringing together a collection of antique jewelry with an equally beautiful antique jewelry box.
