Woman Makes Living From Horse Art
Getting a horse to pose is impossibility for most people. Unless, of course, you are this lady equestrian photographer of Pasadena, California, whose horse portraits are trotted out for show in such homes as those of famous celebrities. She was once a girl who borrowed her first camera from Pasadena City College (PCC) and now takes her motor home to tracks and shows, including the Montreal Olympics, where she snapped photos of British Princess Anne.
It was only practical that she should practice photography on horses for her PCC photography classes, which she took after graduating from Pasadena High School. Her family lived near the Eaton Canyon Riding Stables since she was 10 years old. On weekends, she would take her borrowed camera to snap pictures of stable horses for her homework. After her first horse photo sold, her hobby eclipsed her other subjects in music, art, and journalism. Starting at a show in Santa Barbara, she became an assistant to two famous photographers, and they traveled the country together photographing horse shows, tracks, and state fairs. Her next gig was with another photographer pair, who kept to California circles. Now with business assistance from her mother, she is clicking on her own with a Swedish camera equipped with German lens.
Six-foot jumps and winning a race by the nose are her trademark shots. But her formal photos, of horses bent down on all fours, are also a source of pride. Photogenic horses like to show off. She found horses that immediately perk their ears or raise their heads when they feel a camera being focused on them. Other horses wouldn't give you the time of day.
Even good photographers put a little effort into their photos. Mid-air with legs bent at the right angle is the best bet for hunters and jumpers. With Tennessee walkers, the best photos are those with their front hoofs in action and an over reaching hoof with their hind legs. Whereas the best pictures of stock horses are them stopping in a slide, the best pictures of saddle horses are those with their heads and legs held high. For her photos of the Peruvian Paso, an endangered South American species that many are struggling to save, she has received due credit. It would be best to snap a picture when their forelegs are pointed away from their bodies. They make great photographs with their riders who usually sport traditional white ponchos and elaborate bridles and saddles. She has found photography a good way to meet celebrity horse enthusiasts. Even royalty is not beyond her reach. She was able to get close to the Queen, of all people, after photographing Princess Anne at the Montreal Olympics. She asked Queen Elizabeth if it made her anxious to see her daughter taking high jumps, and the Queen answered in the affirmative. At some point she felt she could do with some variety and tried photographing fork lifts, in addition to her spare time activities, like swimming, back packing, bicycling, panning for gold and sometimes even horse riding.
The good thing about fork lifts is posing is virtually unnecessary.
