What Is A Ringworm Cat?
Do you know what is ringworm? The most common fungal skin infection that cats can get is called ringworm. The cat can be at times referred to as a ringworm cat. The ringworm developes from a group of microscopic fungal organisms termed dermatophytes. The surface dead skin layers, hair and claws are attacked by the ringworm.
The three different types are Trichophyton Mentagrophytes, Microsporum Gypseum and Microsporum Canis.
Microsporum gypseum is usually from cats that dig into a patch of contaminated soil.
Trichophyton mentagrophytes is given to cats that have been subjected to rodents burrows or the rodents.
Microsporum canis accounts around seventy five to ninety eight percent of the ringworm cases discovered in cats. It is estimated that up to twenty one percent of cats are known as asymptomatic carriers. (cats which carry the fungus but show no signs of it). Microsporum canis is extremely infectious. Ringworm can transfer from cat to dog, dog to cat and human to cat, etc.
A cat will become infected by direct contact with an infected person, pet or animal as well as infected bedding, grooming equipment, furniture and carpet. The spores that are attached in the cat hairs can remain inaffective for more than 12 months.
What ringworm signs are you looking for?
The common signs are circular patches of hair loss especially around the limbs and head area. Ringworm can occur to any part of your cats body too. There can be grey patchy baldness areas, onychomycosis, seborrhea sicca or flaky dry skin.
There are several ways to diagnose a cat with ringworm. A black light called Wood's lamp, a culture sample, a biopsy or a microscopic examination can be done.
The hair shafts will glow a fluorescent green if ringworm is present when using the Wood's lamp. About 50% of the ringworm strains will show when using the Wood's lamp method.
A microscopic examination is quick and easy but can yield inaccurate results if the sample used has no spores. The vet is examining the hairs for microscopic fungal spores. An experienced mycologist is recommended for the examination since the spores can be difficult to see.
The culture sample process is the best method because the exact species of fungus can be determined. After about 10 days, the culture results should be known. A biopsy is recommended if the lesions are uncharacteristic.
The cats treatment should commence immediately if the cat has ringworm. Don't forget to treat the cats environment as well. All cats should be treated if you have more than one cat. Just as a reminder that if you have healthy cats, the fungus will resolve itself often in 2 to 4 months time. The recommended process is to quickly start the ringworm remedy to prevent the spread of ringworm to individuals, other pets or animals.
Shampoos and dips are the most effective ways to treat ringworm cats. If you are bathing the cat, this should be done every 4 to 6 days for approximately 2 to 4 weeks. When using lime sulfur dips, the cats hair coat will turn yellowish, however, this will usually fade in time.
Griseofulvin is usually used as an antifungal drug for cats. Griseofulvin affects the fungal cell division allowing the cats immune system to control and fight the ringworm infection. There are side effects and precautions involved with griseofulvin. Don't forget to ask your vet about this before starting the ringworm treatment. You can also ask your vet about other drugs as ketoconazole (Nizoral), Itraconazole and Terbinafine (Lamisil). Fel-O-Vax MC-K made by Fort Dodge is a vaccine. You may want to ask your vet about the availability and effects of this product.
