The Best Film Schools
What film schools are considered the very best? Not surprisingly, most of the schools with the best reputations are in the United States. It is also no surprise that many of them are close to exactly where the action is - Hollywood or New York, exactly where the majority of films are produced.
In California, the best schools are USC, UCLA, the American Film Institute and the California Institute with the Arts. All of those schools boast teachers that have substantial history and experience in the film company like Robert Zemeckis, Peter Guber and James Gray. Tuition could be in between twenty to forty thousand per year.
In the state of New York, NYU still holds the crown of becoming the best school while Columbia University is operating a close second. Costs for NYU grad school could be around twenty thousand a year, but the cost can still double if room and board is included. Columbia costs about forty thousand, with added costs making it about fifty-five thousand.
What do you get for that? Superb professors, but the class size have a tendency to big, which tends to drown them. When you've forked over that much cash, you surely would hope that you'd be guaranteed a job whenever you get out with the program. Chances are you currently can still end up jobless because the sheer number of film school graduates every year is daunting. It doesn't matter whether your professor includes a lot of contacts in the business because with the number of students per year all these contacts could be exhausted and utilized.
Surprisingly, none of those schools provides a true mentor program exactly where a student can watch a professional at function while making some solid business contacts. The Film Connection Film Institute does have that type of one-on-one mentoring but few other locations do. CBS provides a mentor program for television writing. The participants are allowed to observe the making of CBS shows and then obtain feedback on their writing from two business experts in the network. But these kinds of possibilities are few and far in between.
Are these fantastic film schools worth it? It is a toss-up. James Cameron didn't spend thousands on film school. Kathryn Bigelow did. Lee Daniels skipped it while Jason Reitman didn't.
Majority of those film school graduates will spend a fortune attending these institutions while learning, but the diploma isn't the one way ticket to the heart with the business. It might be a much better option to use that cash to make brief films and characteristic films and use it as a form of calling card in oder to acquire entry to the film business.
