Its All About The Badge

When the premier league kicks back in to action this weekend, it will signal the end of a long wait, so now its time for an alternative preview. You've been along to see your team in the flesh, you've bought the hideous third strip to wear in the pub when they play, but have you ever wondered where your club badge came from and why it has a ship, 2 arrows and a lion on it?

Wonder no more, as we take a look at the why and how of club football logo design. Actualy, before we get in to this, it's worth pointing out that many of the big clubs have logos which say exactly what they are, Chelsea's lion for example or Brighton's seagulls, but others are a little more obscure and complicated. Some teams are just impossible to work out with many additions over the years, meaning lost.

Although Wigan Athletic have one of the most complex badges in the premier league, it isnt actually that hard to work it all out. Their club logo is the coat of arms adopted from the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, but thats not enough to work out the items within. The team logo is made up of a lion, sparrow hawk, a knights helmet and castle, a tree, some grass and in the middle some diamond shapes. The colour usage is interesting too with mainly black and gold used and a splash of red. Odd choices considering Wigan play in blue and white stripes.

Unravelling the reasons behind these eclectic choices for inclusion tells a unique story, as it does for most football clubs badges. For instance, like many clubs in north of England, there is a tip of the hat to heritage with the black diamonds representing the coal mining and the red rose taken from the county of Lancashire. The lion and the castle come from the arms of the county borough of wigan while the "wiggin tree" as it is know is a pun on the name of the district. The sparrow hawk was included as a tip to former boroughs under Leigh and Atherton. In other words, Wigan's logo designers made full use of the local geography and history when creating the crest.

Unlike Wigan, who have only changed their logo 3 times in over 100 years, other teams have not been so lucky. Fulham for instance had to completely redesign their logo in 2001 due to some complications around marketing of their brand. Their old logo was actually owned by the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham and therefore made it impossible to use on anything other than the shirt. When you add in that a survey of Fulham fans found that only 14% could identify their football club logo, you can see why it made sense to change. Thus the current design is bland and plain, but at least the club owns it!
