GM Likes $ 2 Billion 3Q, Works On IPO

The North American automotive market is experiencing a turnaround, and General Motors is no exception. Reuters reports that GM recorded $ 2 billion in profits for the third-quarter, with an earnings per share boost of $ 1.20. Thanks to this success, General Motors is optimistic that following week's first public offering of stock may also trend well.

This is the most successful quarter GM has had since the bankruptcy emerging in July 2009 with $2 billion in profits. Lower operating costs and a reduced dependency upon sales incentives have helped the profit margin. These great results will certainly help the $13 billion IPO. It is much more likely to happen now. 2010 profits appear to be what might make the business profitable. This would be the first time, says Reuters, since 2004 that this has happened. In North The US, cash earnings for GM have increased within the 3rd quarter of 2010 for the third consecutive quarter. GM CEO Dan Akerson is concerned though since GM has been losing a lot in Europe when international sales have seemed to stop.

"We still have to fix Europe,” he said in a statement. “We continue to be vigilant in reducing cost in the enterprise, and we have just began doing a better job in marketing our brands to consumers."

Starting with investors

General Motors has had to make a major sales pitch for the IPO. Part of this involved slashing costs and setting Europe up for future growth. The U.S. Treasury will own only 43 percent of the company instead of the current 61 percent with the common and preferred shares being offered.

What the fourth quarter will show

GM's fourth quarter should prove to be productive, as the Chevrolet Cruze compact will be introduced to compete against the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla. The lift the Cruze is projected to bring to General Motors should enable it to keep its spot as the top-earning U.S. automaker, writes Reuters. Chrysler had an $84 million net loss within the third quarter when Ford, second up to General Motors, had a $1.7 billion profit.
