Ways To Learn German Quickly And Cheaply
Like most studying, when it comes to learning German, there are two types of people and they suit two different ways of solving the problem. Some people have little spare time but are prepared to spend money and those that may have less budget but plenty of spare time.
An individual with money to spend is comfortable spending this money on gaining good conversational German skills. A person with plenty of time will use this spare time but avoid spending money on becoming fluent. Both approaches will give you success but they work in different ways and have benefits and disadvantages unique to them.
For example, a person that is prepared to spend a bit of cash may well go to Germany and enrol in an intensive, immersion German course that lasts for a month or even longer. The immersion way of learning is generally agreed to be the best way to learn another language. The main advantage of using an immersion process is that you are living in a country where the language is spoken.
So you are exposed to it 24/7. Although this is not strictly true as you might do some sleeping during that time, but you know what I mean. You will hear German all the time and you will be given ample opportunities to practice what you have learned in the course with people that you meet in shops, bars or at social events. This can certainly increase your language skills and get you to a level of German fluency or good conversational German in no time at all. But of course this is expensive and not many people can justify this expense.
For these people the better option is to use other methods that may require more time but not spend money on an immersion course. This method works and you can get to a good conversational level but it will take a bit of your time.
Typically, you would buy a home study course or attend night classes. In other words, you would be squeezing your German studies in between all the other daily activities that you have to do.
If you go for a home study German course, comprising of some audios or a software package, then you would probably use it in between your responsibilities at work or spending time with your partner. Of course this method would be cheaper than going to Germany or another German speaking country and taking a course but it would also take a bit more time to get the adequate German language skills to become fluent.
So how do you combine the two ? How do you learn effectively but at little or no cost at the same time ? This is a tough problem but the solution is to bring the immersion method to you.
You may be located in an isolated part of the country where meting a German speaking person is highly unlikely so how do you immerse yourself in the German language in these circumstances.
This is where audio-visual material like books, TV, radio, DVDs and most importanlty the internet come into the equation. Immerse yourself in the language by listening to German music, watch German movies or TV programs. Use all the resources that the internet offers to learn German quickly. Go to sites where German language videos can be viewed like youtube. You can pretty much find anything that you would need to learn a bit of German, like interviews, documentaries and even language courses. You will find that some are subtitled in English too.
You may also think about interacting with other people by using the online forums and chatrooms. Look into podcasts that feature German language courses. Take a look at other sites that feature German courses as some of them can be downloaded for free. There are many sites popping up that allow you to have a one on one lesson with a professional language teacher via skype or some other voip service. Whilst this will cost money, you can do it from home and it will work out to be a lot less than flying to Germany.
Give yourself as much time listening, learning and speaking German as possible. Spend a whole day on this task or even a weekend if you have no outside responsibilities. Weekends are best because you have less commitments and more free time. Each weekend, turn your home into a little part of Germany and your ability to speak German will come on in leaps and bounds.
