Improvements In Medical And Surgical Practices Have Altered The Treatment Of Nearly Every Kind Of Ailment During The Last Hundred Years. Further Improvements Must Surely Continue To Increase Our Knowledge.
It is commonly known that diagnosis and treatment for ailments and diseases of all areas of the human body have developed and improved massively due to scientific advances in recent decades. Every type of healthcare nowadays would be beyond comprehension to our ancestors a hundred years ago, and health difficulties which would previously have resulted in death are now routinely cured or controlled with no fuss. Even those health problems which can still end up being fatal and for which there is not yet a guaranteed cure can still be diagnosed earlier in most cases, and then treated promptly and with more stronger drugs to prolong the life of the patient.
Whilst much attention is paid to those diseases and problems which are life threatening or extremely debilitating – and rightly so – there are a number of long term health issues which are mentioned less, and often these relate to parts of the anatomy, such as the eyes and ears, which can not be functioning properly, but not really in a way that is life threatening. Difficulties with hearing or seeing are more generally thought to cause hassle for the sufferer, rather than being life changing.
Obviously it is fair to say that being hard of hearing or being short-sighted won’t kill the individual, but if left ignored many minor problems can cause other health concerns for the patient. As an example, an individual who is becoming hard of hearing can potentially suffer feelings of isolation, which can then cause feelings of depression, which can cause tension or an addiction to anti-depressants. One minor innocuous health problem can be the cause of a lot of others, when all the individual probably needs is to be tested for a hearing aid – a simple process which gives them back their hearing and lets them to enjoy life to its full potential again.
The same situation applies to the eyes, although it is probably accurate to say that patients are more likely to seek help early on when they realise that they aren’t able to read a newspaper because the words are out of focus or drive a car because they can’t focus properly on the road before them. All the same, if left ignored, eye problems can have a similar impact on other areas of health.
As far as eyes are concerned there are a few health problems which many people will be aware of. Common problems are cataracts and glaucoma – commonly occuring but treatable issues which often affect the elderly. And many individuals use reading glasses or driving glasses to resolve problems with their sight.
There is evidence which show that as long as two thousand years ago the Chinese and the Romans understood the concept of employing a shaped piece of glass to magnify writing and make it easier to read, and historical proof shows that proper reading glasses were in use in Italy seven centuries ago. So with the scientific advances of recent times, it is no wonder that there are now other ways of correcting defective vision. One obvious new concept was the launch of contact lenses, and another was Laser eye surgery which can permanently rectify problems with eyesight so that glasses or contact lenses are no longer necessary. Of course, not everyone chooses to have Laser eye treatment – many people remain keen ontheir reading glasses, or choose contact lenses. However, for some people, the choice to have Laser eye surgery may be suggested by their occupation, or a much loved interest which is difficult to participate in without risking damage to spectacles and the hassle of then not being able to see well for the rest of the activity. It is possibly also accurate to say that Laser eye treatment is popular amongst those who always aspire to look perfect, so there is realistically an argument that medicine is working alongside vanity in this case!
Anyway, science and medicine continue to develop and new cures and treatments are developing all the time. How soon might it be before there is a treatment for ear complaints that works in the same way as Laser eye surgery? After all, there are already procedures for removing scars and tattoos that work in the same way as Laser eye treatment by destroying the unwanted or damaged cells. Time alone will tell!
