What Do You Collect?
Everyone collects something or other. Everything from vinyl to baseball cards to toys is a national obsession unto itself. For the dedicated fan there are even large conventions to attend.
In 1970 one such venue, Comic-Con, was founded and has branched into the area of TV and motion pictures, too. Depending on the rarity and pristine state they are in, some comics can bring in a hefty price tag. The most pricey comic book that sold for $1.5 million, was due not only to its being the first appearance of Superman, but it was also the first appearance of a contemporary super hero. This prize was from 1938 and was a DC Action Comic #1 created by Jerry Siegel and illustrated by Joe Shuster. Someone, somewhere is exihibiting this in his or her condo or office under tight security.
In the collector’s world, another odd thing gathering notoriety are sports jerseys. They are shown in their jersey display casesat all baseball card conventions just waiting for their own convention. A 1950s Mickey Mantle uniform sold for $141,000 in 2007 and a Michael Jordan Chicago Bulls red game uniform from the 1997-98 Championship is selling for $45,500, but none top that of Babe Ruth’s uniform from 1933 that was auctioned for $657,250. All dwelling in grand souped-up jersey display cases for the whole planet to view.
Lastly, one of the more strange collecting things around, which might seem a bit hard to display are flags. Yes flags. Flags, from all countries, from all communities and states around the world are valued in accordance with their rarity, age and form even though it is still a little less common than its cousins coin collecting and stamp collecting. There are flag cases to flaunt these marvels just like with any other hobby. A true collector would never use the word ‘pole’; it is always stated as ‘staff’ or ‘flagstaff’ and there are other particular vocabulary words like vexillology, meaning the study of flags, that go with this hobby. This hobby also has some big spenders in its company; back in 2009 a Union Jack (Britain’s flag) that was used by Second Lieutenant James Clephan at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 was bought for $600,000. This too must be on display in some astonishing flag case over someone’s fireplace mantel; what a conversation starter.
So remember to store all your collectibles clean and protected because you never know how much that baseball card, sports jersey or flag may be worth. The initial investment in those flag cases, jersey display cases or comic display cases may be worth it in the future.
