Six Finger Picking Patterns You Can Play
Finger picking is an excellent way to add diversity to your playing! There are myriad fingerpicking styles you can learn to play. View the video in one sitting to see what the finger picking patterns look like.I suggest you practice each of the patterns over and over until it is easy for you to play. Then move on to the next pattern. The patterns become progressively more challenging to play. Practice the patterns slowly and try to keep the rhythm even.
Here are a couple tips that can help. First, try to consciously relax your hand after ever pluck. Most guitar players hold too much tension in their hands. Another suggestion is to practice slowly and switch to the chords without a pause. Visualize the next chord in advance.
The travis pick is one of the 6 fingerpicking patterns in the video. The Travis Picking style is when you alternate the basses as the fingers play a syncopated melody on the top strings. It was named after the musician, Merle Travis.
Once you know these patterns well, you can use them for other songs. The patterns will become like second nature to you. Playing can become automatic, like driving a car. You will be able to play with ease and if you work on good technique from the beginning, it can become quite natural to play that with good technique all the time.
