WORLD'S ICONIC DESTINATIONS RATED (National Geographic)
WASHINGTON (Oct. 21, 2009)—In conjunction with National Geographic Society's
Center for Sustainable Destinations, National Geographic Traveler has devoted
its sixth annual "Places Rated" Destination Stewardship survey to the world's
most celebrated and iconic travel destinations and how well they have
weathered the pressures of mass tourism and other threats.
Like the first Destination Rated survey in 2004, Norway's fjords region has
again taken top honors, with a score of 85 points. Judges noted the gorgeous
scenery and well-preserved rural life that are vigorously protected. Others
making the top "Best Rated Places" category range from Japan's ancient Kyoto
(#4, 79 points) for honoring the "serenity and charm of ancient Japan" to
Slovenia, formerly part of communist Yugoslavia, tied at #5 (78 points) for
being among the most sustainable and authentic places to visit in Europe.
The United Kingdom is the country with the most winners in this year's top
category: England's Yorkshire Dales, Scotland's Highlands, and Wales.
A total of 133 destinations were surveyed by a panel of 437 well-traveled
experts in a variety of fields related to sustainable tourism. The survey is
the cover story of the November-December 2009 issue of National Geographic
Traveler magazine, on newsstands ...

The Dukes of Hazzard (Unrated Widescreen Edition) $1.99 The teaming of Johnny Knoxville (Jackass: The Movie) and Seann William Scott (Dude, Where's My Car?) as well as the presence of the '70s-flavored car chases that were a specialty of the TV series guarantees that The Dukes of Hazzard will be even more lowbrow than the CBS TV series (1979-85) that inspired it. However, this brain-damaging comedy is more "rehash" than "remake," as good ol' Georgiaboy... |

Chicago $4.94 The movie version of Kander and Ebb's Chicago was long in the making, but it's well worth the wait. Director Rob Marshall's main change was to turn the classic musical numbers into fantasy sequences, but of course this isn't obvious on CD. Most importantly, the arrangements are bursting with life while being true to the show's spirit, and the casting is simply inspired. Catherine Zeta-Jones actual... |

Oliver & Company [VHS] $2.25 Disney does Dickens in this animated version of Oliver Twist, in which a homeless New York City cat falls in with a bunch of mischievous dogs under the leadership of the appealing scoundrel Fagin. The roots of Disney's success with animation in the '90s begins with this clever, energetic, atmospheric movie, which succeeds in capturing the grim world Dickens conjured. Shepherd of the Hills [VHS] $13.79 Director Henry Hathaway never hesitated to return to a picturesque location that had served him well. There's no more striking example than his sequel-in-spirit to the enchanting early-Technicolor Trail of the Lonesome Pine (1936). This time, the enchantment is darker, just as Charles Lang Jr.'s stunning cinematography represents a quantum leap in sophistication over Trail's pleasant pictorialism.... |
