Countries With Tough Foreign Traveler Laws

Foreign travel can present its own unique set of headaches for visitors, from ordering a passport to getting a visa. When you travel outside the country, you will realize that some countries will have harsher laws for visitors to follow, including being followed by a tour guide or having to check into a police station. Before you set foot in a plane, you should be familiar with most of the major laws foreign travelers must follow in order to prevent fines and imprisonment. For visitors to North Korea and China, you will have to cope with some of the strictest foreign traveler rules around.

China

Before you visit any country, it is wise to venture to the country’s embassy site to understand the laws, and China asks all travelers to do just this to avoid any fines and jail time. When you first look to travel to China, the first requirement you must comply with is having to go to the nearest police station and sign in. Visiting the police station should be the first thing that you do once inside the country, as if you do not, you could be looking at jail time and fines. According to the Chinese embassy, all American travelers must have their US passports as well as their visas at all times, as they will be subjected to random inspections from business owners, police officers and hotel managers.

North Korea

When you apply for Russian visas or even Australian visas, the wait is typically short, but for a North Korean visa, you may never get an answer, and if you do, it may be a denial letter as the North is very strict concerning who is allowed to visit. When you do acquire a North Korean visa, you will be accompanied by a government employee who will never leave your side, and this government worker will take you to popular tourist destinations and instruct you on what you can and cannot do while in country. From the moment you step into the country, the government worker will warn you that any photographs taken will be subjected to examination, and under no circumstances will you be able to photograph Kim Jong Il, as the North Koreans see it as a sign of disrespect. Government workers who accompany you have the ability to place you under arrest if you fail to follow their rules.

It is often wise to keep your passport and visa with you at all times to prevent any problems when traveling abroad.  Ready yourself by visiting the country’s main website to read up on any new law changes for travelers, as it’s better to understand the law than to be arrested.
