When one get a notion of Spanish music, one cannot help but think about Flamenco because it is, without a doubt, one of the most famous dance forms that came from Spain. It’s so popular that a lot of people even believe that it is Spain’s national dance form; it has come to the point that when people think of Spain, they probably have Flamenco in mind as well. Flamenco was not a music or dance form that was widely popular or even accustomed in Spain.
Flamenco started from the Andalusian regions and contrary to what it is now, it used to be only known in the Andalusian regions and nowhere else in Spain. Being a music that originates in Andalusia, Flamenco has complex, very fast passages, and the dance is distinguished by loud foot works. It’s surprising that very little is known about the origins of this famous type of dance.
The reason why Flamenco’s origin is still much unclear is that the area it originated from was one of the poorest regions in Spain that time; not only that, the dance form of Flamenco was thought to be heavily influenced by Gypsy music. Andalusia was made up of gypsies, Jews, Moors, and other nationalities that were regarded to be lower class during those eras, and naturally they were disrespected by the upper class people back then. Since it was mostly done by the lower levels of society, historians and upper class society that era neglected what music and dance the common people are doing, so there are very little records that can be restored. Add to that the information that since the lower classes were mostly uneducated, most of the history and practice of Flamenco was passed on through oral tradition; it’s passed on from generation to generation so it’s only natural that it has changed a lot from its original form which is forever lost to historians of this generation.
Researchers and historians, as well as experts today are still trying to know the main ancestry and history of Flamenco; it’s not even sure where and how Flamenco got its name. However one reality stays the same; it has played a major effect on dance cultures all around the world.
