What to Do in San Francisco

San Francisco is one of America's true gems, a top gay travel spot, a promised land to all who enjoy fine wine and a true spectacle for all who appreciate striking geographic contrasts.

When you think of San Francisco, a big orange bridge and an island prison are often the first things to come to mind. Certainly, these things are two of the key tourist attractions for visitors to see, but don’t let your tour of San Francisco begin and end there. The city has plenty of other things to offer that are unique to the city and will let you catch a glimpse the lives of San Franciscans.

San Francisco is a great city for walking. The temperature is never too cold for being outdoors and the city is so pretty; a stroll is a great way to take in all that "The City" (as it is known to the natives) has to offer. And, should your limbs begin to feel a little cramped from walking, all you have to do is jump on one of San Fran’s famous cable cars until you arrive at your next destination. This form of transportation is unique to San Francisco, the city where the trolley was first used, and is a great way to start getting acquainted with the city’s special culture.

And while you’re checking out the city, head over to Fisherman’s Wharf. Stop by Pier 39 for a good time. Pier 39 is famous for its great shopping center, which is filled with shops, arcades, and street performers. And if you’re feeling adventurous, salute the other local inhabitants of the docks—sea lions!—easily glimpsed just off the pier. Fisherman’s Wharf is also the place to go if you’ve got an appetite for seafood. While there are dozens of great restaurants that will satisfy any craving, be sure to stop by Boudin’s restaurant and try their famous sourdough bread (you can even watch it being made!) and unbeatable clam chowder. Fisherman’s Wharf is simply swimming with excitement; don’t miss this must-see!

For a real taste of San Francisco culture, get off the tourist path and check out the local neighborhoods. From North Beach to Chinatown, each neighborhood offers a life of its own that you won’t find anywhere else. The neighborhood of Haight-Ashbury is one of the highlights of San Francisco. Considered the Bohemian center of the city, this neighborhood is the birthplace of such legendaries as the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, and Janis Joplin. These artists have left a remarkable and lasting influence on this district. Haight-Ashbury also boasts of some small but great local eateries, bars and shops, including Amoeba Music, a record store that was once a bowling alley. Here you will find almost any type of music you can think of, with an enormous variety of vinyl. And just a short distance from this district is also located the Golden Gate Park—a huge, gorgeous park that resembles New York’s Central Park.

To experience some real variety, visit Chinatown, which is one of San Francisco's truly interesting and thriving neighborhoods. A walk down any of its narrow streets will bring enticing smells wafting from home kitchens and the many restaurants. Meanwhile, your ears can feast on the sounds of Mandarin mixed with occasional English. It’s like a trip into an exotic culture within and exotic culture.

Lesbian and gay people visiting San Francisco may be primarily attracted to the Castro district to visit the sites and soak of the ambience, but you will discover the whole of the city is accepting of all kinds of people. Enjoy the complete experience of the city!

So while planning your San Francisco get-away, make sure your itinerary takes you off the beaten path. In San Fran you will find unique adventures everywhere you turn. Immerse yourself in the culture of the city; it’s the only way to enjoy San Francisco!

Duets: An American Classic

Duets: An American Classic

At this point, who else but Tony Bennett would have the clout to round up stars on the scale of Elton John, Paul McCartney, Bono, Celine Dion and Barbra Streisand for some duets? The material consists of relatively obvious classics in standard big-band arrangements, and Bennett hims...

The Mamas & the Papas - Greatest Hits

The Mamas & the Papas - Greatest Hits

$7.19

The Mamas and the Papas had a sound that helped define a portion of the 1960s. Their breezy folk classics had a bit of San Francisco psychedelia woven in, and, despite the sweet harmonies, there was also a noticeably dark feel to some of their more popular work. "California Dreamin'" and "Monday, Monday" both utilized enough minors to give them a spooky edge. Greatest Hits is an essential part of ...

San Francisco [VHS]

"San Francisco, open your Golden Gate...." If the classic city anthem isn't part of your life already, it will be after a viewing of this 1936 hit, a wonderful blend of cornpone, spectacle, and song. It's set in 1906, the year the earthquake flattened much of Baghdad by the Bay. Like the disaster movies that followed (including In Old Chicago, a Fox cash-in from a couple of years later), San Franc...

Metallica: S & M With The San Francisco Symphony (Concert) [VHS]

$7.19

There's little doubt that this two-volume concert and documentary package will appeal to die-hard Metallica lovers--given its more than three-hour length (two and a half for the concert segment alone), the band's predominantly white male fan base (repeatedly addressed as "man" by singer-guitarist James Hetfield) will be--in fact already are--ecstatic. But one wonders, especially given the errati...
