For business reasons, Jim travels most of the week while his wife Nancy takes care of the home and kids. Nancy is unhappy that he's away so much, but he is unable to find another job that keeps him at home while paying as much as he makes currently. One can easily see how this can cause issues in the marriage. However, there are a few things that you can do to keep your marriage strong even through these frequent separations.
If you and your spouse spend a lot of time apart, it's vital that you keep in contact with each other. It's best to speak to your spouse on a daily basis, even if you're really busy. You need to communicate in order to stay close together. Choose a time during the day that you're both available to have a pleasant conversation. Work at understanding how the other is feeling by divulging your own feelings about the arrangement. You don't need to always be cheery nor do you need to constantly gripe about the people you work with or what the kids have been doing, but you do need to understand basically how each of you are feeling.
The person being left behind will usually feel the most lonely. In this situation, a job, children, and even a busy schedule may not be enough to allay the harmful, negative feelings of sadness. A good idea is to find a couple in a similar situation so that you'll have someone to relate to. If your spouse travels a lot, chances are good that other company employees are doing so, too. You should seek to form friendship with other wives in the same situation. To help get to know each other better, you could plan get-togethers frequently.
Whenever your spouse does return home, it's important that you spend as much time together as possible. You should enjoy spending time with the person you agreed to spend the rest of your life with. Make sure that nothing comes between you two when you have time to spend together. Your husband will appreciate the fact that you're making time to spend with him.
