Yo Ho Ho And A Bottle Of Rum: Holidays In The Caribbean

Yarrr! Tropical destinations can look very similar. Sunny, beautiful but similar. Thankfully, history is here to set each place apart. Of course, 'history' is broadly something that every place has in some way or form. Whilst you may, for example, travel on Thailand holidays to soak in a sophisticated atmosphere of ancient architecture and Asian mysticism, there is always a part of everyone that craves history that has a firmer grip on the psyche of popular culture.

When you absolutely have to have pirates, you must go on Caribbean Holidays. Simple. Piracy in the Caribbean was in its so called 'golden age' between the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. This was a time when the colonial powers of Spain, France, Holland and England were constantly warring with each other in Europe, as well as disputing ownership of the colonies themselves. With war in Europe, even the mighty naval power of the British was stretched and reinforcements rare. With massive gaps in their defense capabilities, Governors were forced to rely on mercenary ships.

However, these buccaneers inevitably proved difficult to control, even if their illegal actions were often legitimate in warfare. Colonial endorsement was destined to disappear: the colonials' massive navies of the early 18th Century left the mercenaries unemployed. The hired ships were then unwilling to simply return to obscurity and (possibly) poverty. Illegal activity was the inevitable answer. However, by the middle of the 18th century, the colonial powers had won and Piracy had been almost complete erradicated.

One town that appears again and again in pirate history and myth is Tortuga, an actual island off the shore of Haiti. Unfortunately, with the current threat of a cholera epidemic in the wake of the 2010 Earthquake, many tourists will be looking for an alternative pirate town. Kingston, Jamaica is a great alternative. Nearby historical Port Royale is currently being developed as an expansive tourist site specifically to cater to tourists fascinated by 17th and 18th Century piracy. And if Pirates don't float your boat? Mauritius holidays have all the tropical sun you'll ever want, with little danger of plank walking.
