Well lets just say they're little toy creatures that seem to have captured the imagination of kids. They are the kind of toy that both girls and boys would play with but I would say girls will be much more fascinated by them.
Fundamentally, Squinkies are soft plastic figurines or figures of kitties, young puppies, babies, ponies, and other things. They are available in a round bubble therefore you don't know what you are going to get whenever you buy them. That's the surprise component of the toy and on the whole encourages kids to collect or try to get a complete set of Squinkies. Seemingly they can swop Squinkies that they already have with pals and this encourages group play.
There are actually all types of environments or play sets the Squinkies can fit into. You may get things like the Gumball set that looks like a standard Gumball dispensing machine. As a part of this set you get the complete working model and a number of Squinkies characters. They can inhabit and play within the gumball and you can add new characters as you collect more. Zoobles are similar to Squinkies except for they're slightly more brash looking to me. They've sharper features and bright colors while Squinkies appear in muted and lighter colors and look softer. Zoobles are also made from a hard plastic moreover. They appear like Japanese anime figures and are not a distinct creature or person as such. They are fantasy type critters. There is a full back story for the Zoobles including where the come from. There are numerous islands where each collection of Zoobles comes from.
Additionally they come in a ball but the difference is that the sphere is always with them. Position the orb on top of a Happitat (which is sort of a nest or such like for Zoobles) and they transform from the orb into their true identity.
You may get all styles of accessories for Zoobles including play sets and additional Happitats.
It is hard to elucidate why these toys are so popular. All you are able to say is that they have fascinated kids, especially girls from 4 and up. They permit the youngsters to go into a fantasy world where really the only rules are formed by the kid's imagination. Young ones like this and it offers them a chance to role play out their ideas. I guess this is the major appeal of these types of toys.
